Petitions for pardons, remissions, and respites, 1862-1863.

These files document Governor James F. Robinson's use of the governor's power and privilege to pardon convicts and to postpone and remit fines. Included are petitions for relief of people convicted of a variety of different offenses, from breach of the peace and gambling to assault and murder. A number of these petitions are from soldiers who were arrested and convicted for some offense while in the service.

James F. Robinson served as governor of Kentucky for thirteen months, following the resignation of Beriah Magoffin. In his brief period in office he faced the difficult task of guiding the state in time of civil war. Robinson was born in Scott County, Kentucky in 1800.
